Samantha PriceSOC 101Paper 3Ethnocentrism and Cultural RelativismCultural relativism and ethnocentrism are two different ways of judging a culture. Bothcan be beneficial and harmful to a certain extent. With both of these ideas, there comes a specificsect of followers which can be specific individuals and specific nations as well.Ethnocentrism is the practice of judging another culture by the standards of one’s own.Ethnocentrism is necessary, to some small degree, for people to be emotionally attached to theirway of life.Terms such as underdeveloped and primitive are prime examples of the ignorancesocieties use to describe another. A person with an ethnocentric perspective may view othercultures as deviations from what is "normal". But who determines and defines what a “normal”behavior or action is in comparison to those around the world? The practice of judging a culture by its own standards is cultural relativism. This idea canbe difficult for people to adopt due to the fact that it not only requires openness to unfamiliarvalues and norms but also the ability to put aside cultural standards we have known all our lives(Macionis 55).
