Jessica Bode April 2, 2008 Lab 4: Understanding Acid-Base Physiology Introduction Maintaining appropriate pH levels is imperative for proper body function because pH imbalances can denature enzymes that play important roles in metabolic regulation. The body therefore has several mechanisms designed to maintain homeostasis: its primary method involves dissolving bicarbonate in the blood, but it also has kidney and respiratory backups should this fail. Because relatively small imbalances in blood pH can have drastic effects on health and human performance and result in death if not quickly corrected, a basic understanding of the body’s methods of pH regulation is indispensable. Today we are examining the effects of buffer systems, particularly the bicarbonate system, on blood pH levels. Methods Reagants and Equipment : Solution #1: 0 mM bicarbonate Solution #2: 14 mM bicarbonate Solution #3: 24 mM bicarbonate Solution #4: 34 mM bicarbonate HCl Test tubes pH machine Procedure : In this experiment, we were given 10 mL each of different concentrations of bicarbonate solution (0mM, 14mM, 24mM, and 34mM, respectively) dissolved in 1
