622 CE Muhammed tells the Muslims of Mecca that they are welcomed in Medina. The departure, called the Hijrah, becomes obvious to the Quraysh leaders since they notice many people once there are no longer there. They try to stop Muhammed at all cost. Gabriel tells Muhammed when to start the journey because God will guide him so he leaves with Abu Bakr. The Muslims receive a warm reception in Medina. Muhammed becomes leader of the city. 624 CE Battle of Badr between the Muslims and Meccans. This was a key point in Muhammed’s struggle against the Quraysh leaders. 625 CE The Meccans send their army to get revenge for the previous defeat. This battle was called the battle of Uhud. With many losses on both sides, the two sides withdrew in a stalemate. 628 CE The third major battle between the Quraysh and the Muslims was the Battle of the Trench, in which the Quraysh and their allies besieged Medina. The Bani Qurayzah, a Jewish tribe in Medina, sided with Quraysh and broke their treaty with the Muslims. When the Meccans finally
