Instrument of Entertainment. • First "magazine" - 1731, Edward Cave, London; "Gentleman's Magazine" - 15,000 subscribers! • Slow to develop in the United States - Size/Dispertion of population - Economics of publishing - Postal system and transportation - The readers themselves • Revolutionary War - Miscellanies - Thomas Paine worked on "Common Sense" while editing his magazine • Civil War - Photojournalism - Investigative Reporting • Photojournalism - First photojournalist: Hare, reported on sinking of Battleship Maine - Social Role (showed harsh labor conditions (Children in Bondage, Markham)) - "Life" Magazine Muckraking • Magazine Journalism - Crusading Reporters - Controversial, striking content -> mass audiences • Led to outstanding social reform
