Rasmussen 1 Evan Rasmussen Mrs. Ritter English 1010 10/29/2020 Can Too Much Nationalism be Bad? In her article, “Why Do Cartoon Villains Speak in Foreign Accents?” journalist Isabel Fattel asserts the negative effects of movie industries using foreign accents for many of their villains. Fattel’s primary goal is to convey to the audience that the movie industry is creating and diffusing unfair bias on foreigners. By giving a large percent of movie villains foreign accents, children who watch said movies will begin to create negative perceptions of anyone who isn’t American. She adopts a tone of apprehensive caution in order to educate her audience about the potential threats and consequences that these choices of accents hold. Fattel utilizes popular and relevant examples, juxtaposition, and the use of positive diction to inform the audience to the negative extent of which using foreign accents on cartoon villains can have on children. In Fattel’s article, she argues that in a large portion of animated movies, the main villains have foreign accents, which can give children bad perceptions about diversity. She uses the results of a study, by sociolinguist Calvin Gidney, to argue why using foreign accents on villains has negative consequences on children. She argues that a large portion of these accents are either British or Slavic, which reflects America’s real life villains from past wars and conflicts. A peculiar development in this study is that villains in newer films are less likely to have accents that reflect America’s current ‘enemies,’ such as Korea or the Middle East. This is because current directors often base their movies off of movies that were the most successful and popular during their respective childhoods. A common proverb states, “If it ain't broke, don’t fix it,” and this is exactly what is being done in newer animated movies. Financially, nothing is
Rasmussen 2 wrong with the decisions of what accents the villains have, so why change anything?
