Thomas Jefferson (Democratic Republicans) What’s remarkable is that they came about as quickly as they did o Argued: Bank of US, interpretation of constitution o Election ended with Jefferson as Vice- only time in history they have VP and P from two different parties 1824 Election: o John Quincy Adams o Henry Clay o Andrew Jackson o William Crawford To make sure that what happened in 1800 never happened again, we passed 12 th amendment to deal with presidential elections Federalist party dies out because of the Hartford convention Corrupt bargain: henry clay and john quincy adams The “Crime” of ’24—Adams “stealing” the election Beginning of modern day democratic party – the defenders of democracy People opposed to Jackson call him “king Andrew/Jackass the first” Call themselves whigs- William henry Harrison was first to be elected president
