JOHN LOCKE 1690 – publication of the 2 nd Treatise of Civil Government written by John Locke o Locke’s political theory – said at one point, people lived w/o government or civil codes = state of nature where everybody has complete and total freedom, but they realized that this sucks b/c there’s so much conflict --- it’s survival of the fittest Says there’re 3 things that make life worth living : but you can’t protect them in a state of nature 1)Life – life is better if you’re alive 2)Liberty 3)Property How are you to protect those when you’re living in a state of nature? While total freedom sounds good, it wont work b/c you can’t trust everyone to be good. Man is basically evil so we have to control it by installing a government **Justifies the Glorious Revolution saying that people have a right to rebel against an unjust government à this influences and encourages all people that they can overthrow an oppressive government
