Debates Freedom of Speech and Expression Obscenity: Lyrics and Art What is obscenity: o Can be found in forms of behavior, language, or imagery o Cannot be obscene unless it’s declared “without redeeming social value” o If idea has “redeeming social importance” it is protected. Includes: unorthodox ideas, controversial ideas and even ideas hateful to the prevailing climate of public opinion. Support for Censorship Obscenity corrupts children There must be age appropriate exposure Can cut down on violence and other illicit acts Obscene things will corrupt a community’s morals and standards Oppose censorship 1 st Amendment: “government shall make no law against…freedom of speech” A citizen has the right to say what they want as long as it does not call for violence Parents should be able to decide what their child can view Censorship at a federal level means that a small group of individuals are deciding what an entire nation can see, hear, or think
