Beijing students in a protest march on 4 May 1919, students from Peking University and other universities and secondary schools rallied in front of Tiananmen they then marched in the Beijing city, chanting slogans such as "Struggle for national sovereignty externally, get rid of national traitors internally", demanded the Beiyang government not to sign on the Treaty of Versailles and punish the three officials in-charge of diplomacy with Japan, Cao Yulin, Lu Zhongyu and Zhang Zongxiang they handed their petition to foreign embassies and burnt the house of Cao Yulin and beat up Zhang Zongxiang inside Cao's house the Beiyang government arrested some of the students 2. Spread of the movement throughout the nation after the arrest of the students, all sectors of the nation responded to it and urged the Beiyang government to release them the students in Beijing started boycotts of school and it soon spread to other major cities Cai Yuanpei resigned his post as the Principal of Peking University workers and employees joined protests in major cities boycotts of Japanese goods spread nationwide
