1 Alex Manescu Character Analysis In Carver’s short story “Cathedral” we meet a one-dimensional, un-named narrator, who completes a metamorphosis of sorts by the resolution of the story. A man with such strong prejudices learns to accept this man he’s never met before into his heart. Such a large development in the narrator’s character comes from connecting with that which he typecasts. The narrator realizes this change through the events that unfold that evening, at dinner, while getting high, and finally when they draw the cathedral. With each step the narrator learns more of the blind man, and realizes more about himself. When the narrator sits down to dinner with the blind man he does so with assumptions of the man’s incompetence. As the meal progresses he takes significant note of the fact that he can find his food without fumbling. The narrator “watched with admiration, as he used knife and fork on the meat.” At this point in the story the comfort
