Notes Day 3, Feb 5 Dietary Guidelines for Americans A healthy diet is: One that emphasizes fruits, veggies, whole grains, fat free/ low fat milk and milk prods Lean meats poultry fish beans eggs and nuts, etc. USDA Food Guide, 2005 o A diet planning tool that assigns foods to 5 major groups Fruits (ex. Consume no more than one-third of the recommended intake as fruit juice.) Veggies Grains Meats and legumes (dried beans, ex. Lentils, pintos) Milk o Women Age 19-30 Sedentary: 2000kcals per day, Active (walking 3 miles per day at 3-4 miles per hour) 2400 kcals per day. Men Age 19-30 Sedentary: 2400, Active 3000 kcals o Textbook has a chart of the Recommended Daily Amounts from each food group for each calorie level. o History of USDA’s Food guides: 1916: A wheel, intended for children 1970s: The basic 4:Veggies, Fruit, Meat, Dairy 1992: Pyramid with levels 2005: Pyramid with vertical slivers. Other Nutrient-Guiding tools Food Labels (Nutrition Facts) o Mandatory information on food labels Statement of identity Net contents of the package (weight) Name and address of manufacturer, packer, distributor List of ingredients ( listed in descending order by weight Nutrition information o How to read a food label: Number of servings- is it relevant? Check calories Limit Fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium Footnote
