Cat OlsonLab Performed: 9/21/2020CHEM 2204Lab Due: 9/28/2020TA: Dr. William BowieExperiment 28: Synthesis of 4-Bromoacetanilide by Electrophilic Substitution, Part 2 -Purification and IR Spectrum AnalysisObjective:The purpose of this experiment was to analyze the product that was obtained in PartI. The crude 4-Bromoacetanilide that was created in Part I was purified by recrystallization: theproduct was heated in a solution until it was dissolved, then it was precipitated out again at atemperature lower than room temperature by way of a seed crystal or scratching the glass tube. After purification, IR spectroscopy and melting point analysis were applied in order to analyzethe product. This experiment introduced both recrystallization and the FT-IR instrument.Experimental Procedure:The procedure was followed as described in Mayo’s manual pages368-371, with the modifications listed in the “Modifications for Electrophilic Aromatic
