Aniline is converted into maleanilic anhydride after reacting with maleic anhydride, whichis subsequently converted into the imide n-Phenylmaleimide after reacting with acetic anhydride. This experiment is one in which it is very important to be accurate, because if the correct productis not obtained in the first part of the experiment then the second part will not proceed asexpected. The products of both reaction parts are analyzed to ascertain their melting points. TheHirsch funnel is used to dry out the powder product.Experimental Procedure:The procedure was followed as described in Mayo’s manual on pages346-351, along with the modifications provided in the Canvas documentImide SynthesisModifications.
