Due to the immigration growth, the federal need and duties increase,leading to significant reform to the pathway to citizenship. Another reform took place during theGreat Depression in 1933 after the President order the consolidation of both federal immigrationand naturalization functions into Immigration and Naturalization Services. The U.S. Citizenshipand Immigration Services assumed responsibility for immigration services by focusing solely onthe administration of benefits applications(Creation of the Department of Homeland Security (2015).The Agency's function is to oversee lawful immigration, help individuals who wish to becomeU.S. citizens through naturalization by determining their eligibility, process their application,and, if approved, grant them citizenship. It also provides documentation of those that acquirecitizenship through their parents. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services manages theprocess, allowing pertinent residents and citizens to bring relatives who wish to work and live inAmerica. Allow people to work in America on temporary and sometimes provide a path tobecoming a permanent residence. Provide humanitarian programs that protect individuals in andout of America displaced by war, famine, and political unrest. The adjudication of immigrationpetitions, naturalization, and other related immigration services such as employmentauthorization. The Agency must confirm that all applicants are eligible for the specialimmigration status they are seeking or determine they should be rejected because they failed tomeet the legal requirements.
