Philip Sinyavsky English 2100 10/8/07 Elia Kazan: Politically Incorrect (547 words, Essay 3 Final Draft) Elia Kazan was many things in the film industry. He was a director, producer, screenwriter, and novelist. He was even a cofounder of the Actors Studio in New York. Born in Turkey, his family immigrated to New York City in 1913 in search of a better life. Elia began his theatre career as soon as he graduated from Yale University, working in New York group theatres and community films. One theatre group he joined employed several theater professionals who had Communist or other left-wing sympathies. Left-wing ideologists believed strongly into varying degrees of social, political or economic change, designed to promote the public welfare. Seeing as most of America was heavily populated by immigrants, government had to be fearful for spies, or even attacks from within the country, so around 1940, the U.S. government took a political stand.
