Encoding-the process of converting information into a form that can be stored in memory 2. Storage-The process of retaining information in memory 3. Retrieval-the process of accessing and bringing into Consciousness 2. Storage a. Acoustically i. Encoded by sound ii. When you try to remember a phone number by repeating it to yourself b. Visually i. Encoded by forming a mental picture ii. Picture a mental image of the digits iii. Visual coding tends to fades more quickly then acoustic c. Semantically i. Encoding by meaning ii. Helps preserve information in memory 3. Memory retrieval- the process of accessing and bringing into consciousness information stored in memory a. Role of retrieval cues i. Cues associated with the original learning that facilitate the retrieval of memories b. Encoding specificity principle i. The belief that retrieval will be more successful when cues available during recall are similar to those present when the material was first committed to memory c. Context-dependant memory effect i. The tendency for information to be better recalled in the same context in which it was originally learned d. State-dependant memory effect i. The tendency for information to be better recalled when the person is in the same psychological state as when the information was first
