To develop and maintain good relationships, smart companies recognize that it’s good business to spread the word about positive developments. These can include opening new facilities, hiring a new executive, introducing new products or services, or sponsoring
community events—such as the announcements that Carol Cone and her staff write for
ConAgra and other clients. Because good news is always welcome, use the direct approach.
Writing to a successful job applicant is one of the most pleasant good-news messages
you might have the opportunity to write. The following example uses the direct approach
and provides information that the recipient needs: Announces news in a friendly,
