Brittany Rae Salopek Melinda Clark Written Exam MBI 111 Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes In the world, there are two major groups of cells: the prokaryotes and the eukaryotes; this difference is considered to be the most important distinction among groups of organisms. It is believed by scientists that eukaryotes were formed by endosymbiotic theory: originally only prokaryotes existed until a large prokaryote engulfed a smaller one, thereby forming a multicellular organism that began to work together forming mitochondira. This explains some of the similarities between eukaryotes and prokaryotes such as they are both composed of DNA only as opposed to viruses which encompass either DNA or RNA. But, for the most part, these two forms of cells are very different from one another. Prokaryotes can be defined as small, simple cells with no membranes surrounding their genetic material. They are the smallest, simplest and most abundant cells on earth. Although they do not have membranes, some cells may be encased in an envelope that protects, supports and regulates their transport. They exist in various shapes and sizes
