Koryo Period (918-1392) Alternate spelling “Goryeo”  – English “Korea” comes from this name Covers the same period of time as the Tang, Song, Yuan and  beginning of Ming in China – Trade relations with all – Chinese emulation  “Restoration” of Koguryo by Wang Kon (King Taejo) – Northward expansion Conflicts with Liao (Khitan) 993-1018 1033-1044  1000 mile Long Wall Capital at Songdo, then in 1232 to Kanghwa Island Aided in Mongol attempts at invading Japan (1274, 1281) Intermarriage to insure peace with Mongols

Son Buddhism (Chogye-jong) • Founded by Eich'ion and Chinul in the 11 th  and  12 th  centuries – Eich'ion sought to remove corruption • Son (meditation) and Kyo (doctrine) – Chinul wanted change from within • Concentration on Son, yet accepted Kyo – Slightly different from Chan/Zen Buddhism in its  use of Kyo
