Introduction:1.1 Basic DescriptionBody armour is a protective clothing which is used to protect human body with theability to deflect or absorb the impact of projectiles or other weapons that may be used againstits wearer. As long as human beings have been battling, there is a strong need to defence,holding up arms, standing behind something to soak up the strike or bringing something to useas a protective shield. The evolution of body armour is happening along with evolution ofmankind. The main purpose of armour is to protect humans from any danger or from criticalenvironment like in war or battlefield. As long as; there are development in damaging materialslike explosives shells, grenades, mines bullets or any high-speed projectiles, which leads torequirement of new material in body armour to prevent damages to human beings. The wearingof body armour is worn by police force, soldiers, private non-military security forces or evenby socially active politicians who might be targets of attack.1.2 Fundamental PrinciplesThe body armour should be damage resistant, lightweight, efficient energy absorber,comfortable, fit and flexible. If its cost is discussed, then it is also a very good commercialdriver to work upon. Each of the above mentioned challenging requirement are being followedas new material or new innovative design is being developed for armour. Ballistic impact isdefined as a dynamic event which occurs within few micro seconds, therefore resistive andeffective responses by an armoured structure including its material have to occur within thistime period. Thus, materials having their elastic or plastic behaviour time-dependent will alsorespond in a different way under ballistic impact. For example, bullets of any hand gun can beshielded by use of a pack of layered fabrics which can stitched together or loosely held. Forknife or spike attack, packs of laminated fabrics or metallic elements are used. Thus, the scienceof body armour material is reviewed based upon understanding of relevant energy-absorbingmechanisms in fibres, fabrics, polymeric laminates, composites, metals, bio-inspired materialsand ceramics which all are been extensively used to satisfy the need to military operations andto provide protection appropriate against current terror threats and for modern technology-driven war tactics.
