Sammy is a nineteen-year-old boy who needs a job. He is able to get one as a cashier at a local A&P grocery store. Not exactly his dream job. Sammy, like so many characters we see in movies and books, wants more for his life then what he has. He feels trapped in this world where his parents landed and wants to break free. The only way to do that is to break the chains that hold him down. In this story the chains are his apron. Sammy cannot just do this on his own though. There are reasons that Sammy makes this decision; Stokesie a twenty-two-year-old married man with two kids and Lengel the store manager, Quennie a beautiful girl who came into the A&P in just her bathing suit and the beach. Each one shows him a little bit of how he does or doesn’t want his life to be. In Sammy’s eyes he was Stoksie. Sammy even says, “Stoksie is married, with two babies… as far as I can tell that’s the only difference.” This is Sammy’s future. Though
