Chapter 19 1) The Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte a) Many of the émigrés returned to France and tried to get sympathizers of constitutional monarchists giving them a majority in the national legislature. b) Napoleon grew up in a poor family and favored the revolution and was a Jacobin. c) Early Military Victories i) Napoleon fought with Britain and Austria for the province of Lombardy. ii) After that, he was a hero in France but he still had to beat Britain. iii) He tried to take Egypt which was a British interest but failed and ended up being defeated and Russia and Prussia threatened to invade France. d) The Constitution of the Year VIII i) This put one man, Napoleon, in power and he used the rhetoric of revolution and nationalism, to back it with military force, and to expand the empire. 2) The Consulate in France (1799-1804) a) The consulate was headed by Napoleon and help end the revolution in France b) Since most wealthy people along with the peasants were happy, his constitution was overwhelmingly approved. c) Suppressing Foreign Enemies and Domestic Opposition i) Napoleon justified the public’s confidence in him by making peace with France’s enemies. d) Concordat with the Roman Catholic Church i) The concordat gave Napoleon what he wanted, the church to become part of the state. ii) The state would name the bishops and pay their salaries.
