Name: __Paul Benario _________ Sociology 100-01 March 3, 2008 … and the Poor Get Prison Writing Assignment If possible, please type. What does the author mean when he suggests that the “state of evil” is “reflected in a carnival mirror?” __When the author said “It is the face of evil reflected in a carnival mirror, but it is no laughing matter” what he really was saying is that the U.S. justice system is distorted and flawed and its not something funny. The perception of our society doesn’t change, however it is saying that it is distorted like looking through a carnival mirror. ____________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Why do you think people from the lower classes are more likely than those from the middle and upper classes to “come to the attention of the police?” __I think those from the lower classes are more likely to come to the attention of the police because of biases from society and stereotypes put on those people. For example in bad areas and low income areas police assume there will be more law breaking and problems there. It goes back to the idea of if their friends or parents have done it, they can do it, because they don’t know any better.
