Compiled By:Sylva Anastasia Situmorang4203111082MATHEMATICS EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM MESP2020MATHEMATICS DEPARTEMENTFACULTY OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCESSTATEUNIVERSITY OF MEDAN20201. Describe at least 3 expert opinions on the School of Philosophy:
1. William James (1842-1910 AD)William James was born in New York in 1842 AD, the son of Henry James, Sr. hisfather was a famous, cultured, creative thinker. Apart from being rich, his family isindeed equipped with high intellectual abilities. His family also applied humanism to lifeand developed it. James's father was diligent in studying humans and religion. Anyway,James's life was full of studies accompanied by creative efforts to answer variousproblems related to life. His works include, Tha Principles of Psychology (1890), Thee Will to Believe(1897), The Varietes of Religious Experience (1902) and Pragmatism (1907). In hisbook The Meaning of Truth, The Meaning of Truth, James argues that there is noabsolute truth, which is generally accepted, which is permanent, which stands alone andapart from all knowing reason. Because our experiences continue and everything wethink is true in that development is always changing, because in practice what we thinkis true can be corrected by subsequent experiences. Therefore, there is no absolutetruth, there are truths (that is, in the plural) that is what is true in particular experienceswhich can be changed each time by subsequent experiences. The value of experience in pragmatism depends on its consequences, on its work itmeans that it depends on the success of the actions prepared by that consideration. Thisconsideration is correct if it is beneficial to the perpetrator, if it enriches life and thepossibilities of life.James presented pragmatism. This ism was passed on to Dewey who practiced it ineducation. Education produces Americans today. In other words, the people most responsiblefor today's generation of America are William James and John Dewey. What is the mostdestructive of their philosophy? Just one thing that we call: The view that there is no generalmoral law, there is no general truth, all truth is not final. This results in subjectivism, individualism, and these two alone are enough to shake lives, threaten humanity, and evenhumanity itself.
