I. Identifications Normative Argument – argument based on moral or ethical reasoning Irredenta – a group of co-nationals separated from other nationals by state boundaries Revolutionary Threshold – the % of people desired by a given person that are in favor of revolution in order for that person to join the revolution II. Fish’s argument is that Islam in Middle Eastern countries, by way of the repression of women in society and politics, hinders any chance of democratization. The independent variable is the level of contribution by women to society and politics, measured by male/female literacy gap, amount of women in office, and sex ratio. The dependent variable is the level of democracy. The causal mechanisms are the reflective nature of family and societal dominance on politics by way of authoritarianism, the way women are greater at building consensus, and the segregation of boys and girls growing up lending to a domineering society. Fish had several shortcomings in his proof of causality. The causal mechanism of family/society reflecting to political nature is purely speculative. He resorts to using a quote by Martin Luther King Jr. to help his case, hardly substantial justification. In addition, he never manages to rule out the effects of other variables, such as oil revenue and former Soviet influence, instead he just downplays their importance.
