Outline – Writing about the Humanities: What Use is Art? 1) Introduction a) Art . Humankind has continually struggled to define this three-letter word  and the purpose to which it serves our society. The fine arts include  architecture, sculpture, painting, music and poetry, and any single piece of  work from any of these categories has the potential to change someone’s  life. If an observer gains understanding or appreciation of life in the real  world from this piece, then the artist has succeeded, but what about the  art that does not succeed so thoroughly? As students, artists are taught to  create a distinct style for themselves, but because of this pressure they  tend to lose sight of what is truly artistic; art become arbitrary when the  artist is more focused on maintaining their style rather than composing  something inspiring and relevant for their audience. In pieces such as  “The Man He Killed,” and “She Proves the Inconsistency…” by Thomas  hardy and Sor Juana De La Cruz, respectively, the artists’ focus is  extremely evident because the reader is left reflecting upon his or her own  life. Artists need to strive to produce transcendent art, rather than let their  mediocre art contribute to the arbitrariness that art has recently become. 2) Body 1: What is art? What is its use? Is it arbitrary? a) Define art (cite “What Use is Art?) 3) Body 2: Thomas Hardy: “The Man He Killed” a) Though people exchange words casually day in and day out, artists  manipulate them to construct ideas that hold significantly higher meaning
