Unformatted text preview: Chapter 7- A Tour Of The Cell Cell: This is the basic unit of living organisms. It displays structural order, emergent properties and the direct correlation between structure and function. -THE CELL THEORY- 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells 2. The cell is the basic unit of organization in an organism. 3. All cells come from preexisting cells. I. Microscopes And The Study Of Cells Light Microscope (LM)- Visible light is passed through the specimen and then a glass lens. The lenses refract the light in such a way that the image of the specimen is magnified. Resolving power is the resolution of the image. Resolution is limited by the wavelength of the visible light. Electron Microscope (EM)- A beam of electrons is focused through a specimen. TEM aims an electron beam through a thin section of the specimen and is ultimately focused onto a screen for viewing. It is used to study the ultra structure of the cell. SEM is useful for the study of the surface of the specimen because after being coated with gold, the electron beam excites the electrons of the...
