SOC 005 REVIEW TEST 1 Expected to be familiar with, able to define (or state): Values- a concept that describes the beliefs of an individual or culture . Norms- is a rule that is socially enforced. Mores- are norms or customs Social problems- condition that disadvantages a significant number of societys population Deviance- behavior that is a recognized violation of social norms Social institutions- a group of social positions, connected by social relations, performing a social role Subculture- set of people with behaviors and beliefs that differentiate them from the larger culture that they belong Theory- a logically self-consistent model or framework for describing the behavior of a related set of natural or social phenomena. The role of theories in sociological analysis of social problems Macrosociology- study of large scale society Microsociology- study of human interactions on a small scale Functionalist perspective- emphasizes the role/function each social institution plays in keeping a society running; social problems are functional Conflict perspective- focuses on how inequality gives rise to conflict; negative consequences for the majority; society is always
