4 MK & TK especially strong in Navarre They wanted to overthrow the godless Red republic Landowners (latifundia): Nationalists adopted an aggressive stance towards workers the landowners ally with the church, support Rivera, and oppose the reform legislation of the Republicans landowners were still in control after the civil war and agriculture remained backward Monarchy (Restoration): In 1874 the monarchy was restored Element of the Nationalist Right along with the church This Restoration Period witnessed numerous military interventions Protected by the carlists Catholic church: great body in Spanish society with power and privilege conservative in nature, it was closely connected to the wealthy classes and the army the Church controlled the nation’s education and fought against all “anti-clerical” ideologies and groups, including liberalism and socialism atheism and anarchism Anarchism: Part of the Popular Front anarchism were embraced by many, but not the army which feared the latter might orchestrate a takeover They oppose Rivera’s rule created their own national trade union, the CNT, a rival to the UGT although of the left they opposed even the gov’t in Moscow, felt the many trade union and collective organizations would sort things out (govern) through negotiation;
