Review of Assignment and Lecture 10 (2/8): The Emergence of Greece Reading Assignment: Martin Ch. 4 Questions: What are the most important changes in Greek society taking place c. 750-700 BC? During this time there were many social political and cultural changes. The Greeks started to get a sense of identity and Pan-Hellenic attitudes were prevalent. The emergence of the polis increased a sense of community when people shared common laws, gods, and defended together. What is the difference between pictographic, syllabic, and alphabetic writing systems? How does the emergence of an alphabet change the way writing is used? From whom did the Greeks get their alphabet? The Greeks got their Alphabet from the Phoenicians. Pictographic and syllabic writing systems forced many people to memorize thousands of symbols. The 24 letter alphabet created efficiency and allowed more people to become literate because less needed to be memorized. Writing was a more common practice after the adoption of the alphabet. How did the spread of writing affect Greek society? What is interesting about the writing on the Dipylon oinochoe and the Cup of Nestor?
