Daniel C. Morgan Cat Paternity Testing Through DNA Fingerprinting The ability to trace paternity through analysis of DNA is due to the fact that all DNA is structurally similar; the only derivations come in the order of nitrogenous base pairs. Through differentiation between meaningful information sequences depicting development and function known as exons, and their non-information containing counterparts known as introns, unique sequences of base pairs called Variable-Number- Tandem-Repeat loci can be isolated. Restriction enzymes can then cut up these pairs, divulging “DNA fingerprints” which through further analysis can tell scientists whether or not two samples are from the same person, persons related or two totally unrelated persons. This directly aids in the determination of relatedness in terms of maternity and paternity, and is thusly used in the confirmation of legal nationality cases, instances of adoption and biological parenthood issues. In this experiment a type of analysis known as restriction fragment length polymorphism, involving the treating of DNA with certain restriction enzymes, which cut the DNA to specific sequences occurring randomly through the molecule is utilized to get the strands into uniform sizes for easier and more precise comparison leading to more valid data. Ecological factors have various affects on mating throughout species, whether it be availability of food and habitat or how far houses are spread out in a neighborhood, and therefore the relative density of the population of cats ( Felis catus L.
