Gorman 1 Jarrett Gorman MC 111 Professor Berg November 14, 2012 Angels In America Paper The Mysterious Unknown Goal: To create a more contestable and specific thesis and overall topic People often cling to the known in order to protect themselves from the unknown. The unknown is mysterious phenomenon that causes people to fear it more than almost anything in this world. Thanatophobia, the fear of death, is often attributed to the idea of the unknown being associated with death. It is human nature for one to want stability in their life and prefer having control of their own future rather then being constricted to the unknown. The addition of the unknown takes away the ability for one to understand the world around them. In order to explain the unknown many people look to religion for guidance or start to abuse drugs to disassociate themselves from the overlying problems in their life. The fear of death along with the anxiety associated with the unknown often leads people to a spiritual journey or forces them to run away from their problems. People are afraid of death not because of the physical or emotional pain they experience, but rather because they fear the possibilities of the unknown.
