Exam 1 Review This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of everything that will be covered on the exam, but should serve as a useful guideline for the general topics you will be expected to know in depth. All topics have been covered in class and/or your text. The exam will ask you a combination of T/F, multiple choice, and short answer questions. Short answer question will not require more than a sentence or two to answer sufficiently. - Chapters covered: 1-12, 14, 16. - The basics of a speech: components of a speech; the components of the components (e.g. Parts of an introduction); what is rhetoric, what is the rhetorical situation. - Listening effectively (from text). - Topic selection: what factors make an effective topic; how to focus your topic (e.g. Funneling). - Main ideas: be able to identify a proper thesis statement, main topic sentence, specific purpose; know what makes these ineffective (e.g. A preview vs. a thesis, or support vs. a main topic sentence).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
