AP U.S. History: Thesis Writing Name: DIRECTIONS: Please write thesis statements for the FOUR DBQ prompts at the end of this document. You ONLY need to write a thesis. This appears to be what we most need to work on. Remember a thesis must take a defensible position AND it must provide a line of reasoning. EXAMPLE: PROMPT: Evaluate the extent to which the debate over slavery between 1790 and 1860 was effective and why the slave debate went on for so long in America. Counterargument Thesis statement Line of reasoning While, the abolition movement grew in intensity and effectiveness from 1790 to 1860, the argument in favor of slavery was clearly the most effective during the period of 1790 to 1860. This can be seen in the fact that we codified black people as 3/5ths of a person in our U.S. Constitution and the market forces that drove the Southern slave trade were largely uninterrupted throughout the period. This demonstrates that slavery was deeply ingrained in our political and economic system from the beginning.
