What is the Harlem Renaissance ? The Harlem Renaissance was an eruption of art, intellect, and music primarily within the black community of Harlem. This took place roughly between the 1910’s through the mid 1930’s. This period is considered a “golden age” in African American culture.
Langston Hughes Born February 1 st , 1902 and died May 22 nd , 1967. Soon after high school Hughes first poem “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” was published. Expressed a strong sense of racial pride. Communicated equality and celebrated African American heritage through his poems, essays, and novels.
Style When Hughes wrote his poems he did so in a literal way, describing what his life was like as a black man during this time. In his work he often used jazz and African American folk rhymes.
