Chapter 9: Group Tests of Mental Ability Group Mental Ability Tests: Uses About 50 million group-administered mental ability tests are given annually in the US and there are 4 major uses of these tests: 1. Elementary and secondary schools: Usually given in conjunction with a standardized achievement test (results of the mental ability test are compared with the results of the achievement test) 2. Predicting success in college, graduate, or professional schools (e.g., SAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT) 3. Job selection/placement in business and military settings 4. Research in the social or behavioral sciences 8 Common Characteristics 1. Can be administered to large groups 2. Content is similar to individual tests 3. Multiple-choice, machine-scored tests 4. Fixed time-limit, fixed number of items 5. Bimodal distribution of administration times: 45 to 60 minutes or 2½ to 3½ hours 6. Total score plus several subscores 7.
