The SAT: Overview SAT Reasoning Test (2005 update) o Critical reading, mathematics, and writing The structure was changed in 2005: o It used to be only 2 tests: verbal and mathematics o Writing was added in 2005 – includes an essay and multiple choice section The SAT Reasoning Test: attempts to measure highly generalized abilities developed over a long period of time o The test content is based on skills that should be developed in school o The tests are not measures of “innate aptitude” SAT Reasoning Test: Items Area Item Types Time (min) Critical Reasoning Sentence Completion Reading Passages 25, 25, 20 = 70 total (3 sections) Mathematics Multiple-Choice Grid-in 25, 25, 20 = 70 total (3 sections) Writing Essay Multiple-Choice 35, 25 = 60 total (2 sections) Total 3 hours, 20 minutes SAT: Scores and Norms Standard score system for each of these tests o M=500, SD=100 o Ranges from 200 to 800 o The scaled score norms were determined on a national reference group
