The Zimmerman Document The Zimmerman document was a secret diplomatic telegram sent from the German Foreign Office in January 1917 to its German ambassador in United States of America. British intelligence services managed to intercept and interpret and inform the American government. The telegram recommended a military alliance between Germany and Mexico. In the telegram, the German were planning an intensified submarine warfare in the Atlantic and hoped that the United States of America will remain neutral (Trail, 2013). However, in the event that the Americans decided to join the war and help the Allied powers, then Germany proposed for Mexico to take up arms against the Americans and reclaim Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Mexico and Germany should wage war against America and in return, Mexico would beneficiaries of generous financial assistance from Germany. Germany’s aim for engaging in hostile activities in the Atlantic was to force America to get into war with Mexico and hence America would direct most of its resources in fighting Mexico instead of supporting the Allied
