AP Physics Experiment – Resolution of Forces Purpose To determine the magnitude of an unknown weight by the resolution of forces Procedures 1. Place the centering ring on the locking pin at the center of the force table. 2. Position three of the pulleys at angles of 210 o , 90 o , and 30 o along the circumference of the force table. 3. Measure and record the mass (kg) of a hanger plus a set of slotted weights of 100-200g to the nearest tenth of a gram using a triple beam balance or electronic scale. Convert the total mass (kg) to weight in Newtons (1kg=9.8N). . 4. Attach the hanger and slotted weights to the cable attached to the pulley positioned at 90 o . Record the force exerted on the cable (Newtons) due to the attached weights. Note that the cables attached to the centering ring passing over the pulleys must be parallel to the surface of the force table. 5. Repeat steps #3 and #4 for the cables positioned at 30 o . The weight attached to the cables should differ by at least 20 grams if possible.
