AP Physics Experiment – Electrical Resistance (Wheatstone Bridge) Purpose To determine the resistance of an unknown resistor Procedures Refer to the diagrams of the Wheatstone Bridge for arrangement of components. 1. Connect the dry cell using wires to terminals C & D. Connect the galvanometer using wires to the middle of the slider & to the midpoint along the outer edge not containing the meter stick. 2. Connect the resistance box (R 3 ) using short heavy wires to terminal pairs 1 & 2. Connect the unknown resistor (R x ) 3. Set the resistor box to 1000 (1K) ohms by moving the toggle switch to the up (in) position. All other toggle switches should be in the down (out) position . 4. Position the slider at the 50cm mark on the meter stick. Tap one of the contact buttons to check the reading on the galvanometer. Equivalent resistance is achieved between the known and unknown resistors when the galvanometer shows a reading of zero (no needle deflection). 5.
