Article: Implementing a CAUTI Prevention Program in an Acute Care Hospital Setting. Author: Annette Ferguson Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement an educational program on catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) to the nurses on two units of an acute care hospital and to enhance nurses’ knowledge on appropriate indwelling urinary catheter care and decreasing CAUTIs (Ferguson, 2018). Type of Study: Quality Improvement Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are the fourth leading cause of healthcare -associated infections (Ferguson, 2018). They lead to extended hospital stays and increased health care costs. Also, it can lead to complications such as sepsis and death. According to Ferguson (2018), “Nurses can play a key role in preventing CAUTIs among hospitalized patients, and subsequently, impact the outcomes and burden of CAUTIs by adhering to evidence-based practice guidelines.” As nurses, it is our duty to advocate for our patients. In order to do so, we must have adequate knowledge.
