8 November 2007 Professor Erfani Second Essay John Locke: An Essay Concerning Human Behavior 6. Describe and evaluate the importance of sense-perception for Locke. Do you agree that all knowledge comes from our senses? In An Essay Concerning Human Understanding Locke places a huge importance on how our senses help us to perceive various aspects of life . He starts with the belief that all ideas are created because of thinking, which is obviously true . Our thinking is affected by observation and experience in our life . From these two acts we derive sensations and from these sensations we begin to reflect on ideas . We then form our memories from these experiences. He furthers his point by stating that all new knowledge must derive from previously existing knowledge . We learn new ideas and gain new levels of understanding both externally and internally . Externally we experience sensations through organs and create an outside world . The operations of the mind and the processing of the external ideas and events of daily life create an internal identity . These observations and experiences lead to sensations caused by reflection on new ideas in our
