Handout No. 5 : Leonardo da Vinci: Biographical Sketch 1452 • Born in Vinci, a town about 15 miles west of Florence. He would have been about 7 years younger than Botticelli and Perugino, 3 years younger than Ghirlandaio, 5 or 6 years older than Filippino Lippi, 23 years older than Michelangelo, 31 years older than Raphael. • “Illegitimate” birth: his mother, named Caterina, was a young farmer’s daughter. Brought up in the household of his father, Piero da Vinci, a prominent notary or lawyer. c. 1469-76 • Age 17-24. Pupil of Verrocchio and residing in Verrocchio’s house in Florence. • Becomes member of the Florentine painters’ guild in 1472. • Collaborates with Verrocchio on the Baptism of Christ (and Tobias and the Angel ?) • Probably paints the Annunciation and the Portrait of Ginevra de’ Benci . • Accused of sodomy (1476). 1476-82 • Working as an independent master in Florence.
