Lesson #7, Assignment #4: Comprehensive Case A Read "Case 9 - Note on the Global Auto Industry in 2007" on pages 310-311 before completing the following case study assignment. Read “Case 10 - Renault-Nissan: The Paradoxical Alliance” on pages 311-323 and answer the following questions; your analysis of this case should be between 700-800 words. 1. What are the key reasons behind Nissan’s performance during the 1999-2006 period? Boundary-spanning leadership: Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Nissan, formed a carefully selected new leadership team consisting of 200 people that was critical in the success of the alliance. Company-wide building blocks: Ghosn adopted English as the common language for all Nissan employees. o Ghosn encouraged certain traits in “future leaders” such as doing what they say and saying what they do. Open communication: Ghosn instilled a culture of open, factual and accurate communication with employees and with media. o He was easily accessible to all of his employees. o Managers were also instructed to follow an open communication approach. Cross-boundary Rotations: Key executives were rotated to international locations that enabled facilitation of cross-functional knowledge. Ghosn adopted a strict performance-based promotion policy. 2. Did Renault’s and Nissan’s decision to form a strategic alliance make sense? Why/why not? Renault and Nissan 's decision to form a strategic alliance made sense because both companies were complimentary in geographic scope and skills. Renault had a flair for marketing and design and was strong in Europe and Latin America. Nissan was an engineering powerhouse with a strong market presence in Japan, North America and Asia.
