Mary Beth King April 1, 2007 Bio 101 Candler Science in the News Most science-related articles in the news deal with the health issues, but there are other issues as well. Many recent articles discuss stem cell research and how it is progressing or when a flaw is found. Along with stem cell research, I found articles on DNA, cancer, and global warming among other topics. An article by Randolph E. Schmid in the Raleigh covers the effects of chocolate on the brain. Research shows that cocoa promotes brain function in aging people and helps to reduce symptoms of dementia in elder people. Flavanols, an antioxidant found in cocoa beans, increase blood flow to the brain which promotes a healthier brain in general. It is also assumed that cocoa can increase overall cardiovascular health. A study has been done on the Cuna Indians of Panama because of their exclusive use of cocoa. The study reports low blood pressure and no reports of dementia among the native Cuna Indians.
