Liberal Bias in the MediaBefore reading the textbook I was unaware that the debate over liberal bias in the media even existed. I did know, however, that some news channels such as Fox News were run by right-wing executives. In “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right,” Al Franken’s main point is that the mainstream media does not have a liberal bias, and that in fact a right-wing media exists. Franken argues that the other, more important biases in the mainstream media than liberal or conservative ones stem from something called “the profit motive.” This is undoubtedly noticeable, as television news channels and magazines will fill American heads with scandal, violence, and sex. This is why a high-speed pursuit chase or a clip of a celebrity walking into rehab gets so much coverage. There is no liberal bias in profit-motivated media companies. This “Sex or Violence” form of bias in the mainstream media seems to pose a problem.
