Unformatted text preview: Drama 281 Notes CITIZEN KANE- First shots of films are extremely important- Citizen Kane opening scene o We do not know what xanadu is but we discover the importance in the later years of his life o Xanadu is symbolic of Kane Very distant Very remote Very cold o Places help situate where Kane is in his life (young, old) o Low luminosity o dissolves creates fluidity o very confusing continuity in content of shots o first view of snow globe Welles has snow fill the screen image of snow globe On the whole, uses many images of water (water, snow, rain) Used to signify a memory of a past event that is in some way a source of comfort o Low lighting o The texture is murky Everything is out of focus or very shallow focus Not very realistic A lot of drawings and models Sense of place is unstable not quite right o tone is subjective o we enter Kanes conscience before we even know who he is o news real is VERY objective juxtapose each other- Matte work o Very prominent in Citizen Kane o Combination of live action with drawings or miniatures o Special effects o Invisible to the eye very smooth lines Cant notice the special effects o- Settings, places, environments o Not just backgrounds o Key to themes o Places are actors o Vibrant embodiments of themes- What we see- How we see o Most important for us- Why we see o Intention o Directors have signature style- Thatchers 1871 Flasback o Layers on images of snow memory into the past o Welles uses long takes in deep focus photography Everything in the field of view is in crisp focus Actions and reactions in the same shot We are able to see Kane, obliviously playing as his life is about to change drastically o Triangular composition o Use of frames within frames Through a window, through a door, reflected in a mirror o We get to choose what we want to look at in the shot o Shot of abandoned rosebud sled in the snow We hear the sound of a train whistle We hear the sound of wind beneath the surface Gives a sad undertone 4E (Winter of 1929, Thatcher diaries, Kane is forced to sign off many of his assets to Thatcher)- Actions are similar to the previous scene o Something is being signed over Kane to the banker this time though o Triangular structure is similar o Frames Standing under window frame Used to segment the action o Bits of dialogue also link back 6G (Day after Kanes defeat in the election)- Important in defining relationship between Kane and Jed- Extreme low camera angle o Causes character to have much more imposing sense of bulk and mass As Kane becomes more manipulative and more obsessed with power Character looms Ceilings appear to be pressing down on character 25mm lens o Welles insisted that scenery have ceilings on them- Lelend comes into background deep focus o Keeps it all in one shot and one space o Breakdown of friendship correlates blocking in the shot o Architecture Vertical beam that separates Leland from Kane...
