Key Term Definition Applicability Relative Risk The probability of an event occurring in exposed people compared to the probability of the event in nonexposed people, or as the ratio of the two probabilities. Relative risk equals risk in exposed/risk in nonexposed Randomized Controlled Trial The objective is to determine whether there is an excess risk, or a reduced risk of a certain disease. RCT is not randomly sampled they are randomly assigned. And is used to tell if the people have improved or not improved. Cohort Study Design The study design enables us to capitalize on populations that have had a certain exposure and to compare them with the populations that haven’t been exposed. Not Randomly Assigned because it is a observational study to see if they develop the disease. Case Control Study Selecting cases and controls and trying to determine who was exposed and who wasn’t exposed the cases are the people who already have the disease. And the control are the ones who have similar traits as the cases but they do not have the disease. Odds Ratio The ratio of the number of ways the event can occur to the number of ways the event cannot occur. Odds equals Probability/1- Probability. Adriana Collado Epidemiology
