Lab Report #1: Tensile Testing  Name: Matt Turner Date Submitted: 12/20/07 Section 10-12 Thursday Group Members: 1. Ray Casper 2. John Matthews Title: Tensile Testing of Al-Cu Alloy 2024 T3 Equipment : Tinius Olsen Electromatic 120 kips Universal Tester  Tinius Olsen Extensometer LS-20%-2B Specimen : Al-Cu Alloy 2024 T3 Abstract A tensile test was performed on a standard 0.5” round specimen of Al-Cu Alloy 2024 T3. The extensometer was taken off when strain reached ~4%. The experimental results show an elastic modulus of 9954916 psi, which is 6.1% lower than the accepted value. The 0.2% offset yield strength, tensile strength, %elongation to failure, and %reduction in area values are 53197 psi, 76130 psi , 18% and 21% respectively. Each of these values exceeded the minimum specified for this alloy of aluminum, and is therefore acceptable. The fracture surface almost shows the typical cup and cone ductile failure, as expected. All in all, the experiment was a success, yielding expected results.
