The main reasons for the Spaniards to establish settlements in El Norte--the northern frontier of New Spain and the area that later is conquered by the U.S., from Texas to California. 2. The causes and movement for Mexican independence beginning on Sept. 16, 1810 with the Grito de Dolores by Fr. Miguel Hidalgo. 3. The beginnings of the causes of the U.S.-Mexico War (1846-48)that start with the fateful decision by Mexico to attempt to fortify its northern frontier by inviting Anglo Americans from the U.S. to settle in Texas and in return for becoming Mexican citizens and Catholics, they received large land grants. When Gen. Santa Anna establishes a military dictatorship in 1835 many of the Mexican states including Texas rebel. Santa Anna is able to put down all of the rebellions except for Texas that despite the Mexican victory at the Alamo in San Antonio, the Anglos with Mexican allies defeat Santa Anna and establish an independent nation, Texas, also referred to as the Lone Star state.
